What is a Siberian Husky?

A dog that has evolved to be of great speed, endurance, great athletic ability with a friendly attitude, nearly 3000 years ago. The Siberian Husky is considered a medium-size working dog, he is quick and light on his feet, free and graceful in action. He is also, elegant, compact and well balanced. The well-bred Husky has a sturdy figure, moderate bone structure and hard muscles that compliment his abnormal stregenth and endurance for which the breed is known. The Siberian has a furry tail and he carries it over his back when alert and attentive. When he is relaxed, his tail is dropped. When he is excited and happy, he wags his tail way above his back. The Siberian has eye color of blue, brown, amber, gold, and green, all which are acceptable. The Siberians profile resembles that of a wolf. He has an undercoat that is soft and fluffy that is close to the skin that is covered by a coarser, longer coat. These 2 layers of fur, insulate the dog naturally from even subzero temperatures. The Siberians coat rarely has the doggy odor of other canines. They are a very clean breed of dog that strives at maintaining his cleanliness. All Siberian coat colors are allowed, according to the standard. From pure black to pure white, red and white, black and white, gray and white, copper and white, the colors seem endless.  No two Siberians are alike or share identical patterns and markings. The Siberian Husky is a dog that loves EVERYBODY. He is not a guard dog at all. He loves everyone he meets and he will go with anyone he meets. IT IS THE UPMOST IMPORTANT RULE OF OWNING A SIBERIAN TO NOT LET HIM RUN UNFENCED OR UNLEASHED OR HE WILL BE LONG GONE.

Siberia, is the home of the Chukchis and the Siberian Husky. Its a region of ice and snow. Without the Siberian, the people of Siberia probably would have not survived. The Chukchis had to develope a dog that would meet the harsh demands of their enviroment and lifestyle. The Chukchis lived in permanent settlements inlands but had to travel long distances to the coast to hunt. They needed a dog that would be small, fast, have the capability to travel light loads over long distances in sub-zero temperatures of northeast Asis. He needed to have an extraordinarily efficient metabolism due to food limitations, and survive on less food than one would expect for such a hardworking animal. A dog bred for temperament as well as physical characteristics, which explains why the Siberian Husky works so well with humans and other dogs and demands to be a member of the family. The Siberian Husky he was called.

Misconceptions about the Husky

The most common misconception about the Siberian Husky is that they have no sense and intelligence. WRONG!  Does the Husky think he should obey every human command without any questions, No he doesn't. The husky is so intelligent he will make decisions himself on his own judgements at that moment. This is considered to be an ancient gift of survival going back to the sled dog heritage. The owner of a husky needs to stay one step ahead of him and keep life interesting at the same time. Do you think you are up to owning a Husky? Too many of these beautiful doggys end up in animal shelters or with breed rescue groups because the owner just didnt' understand the breed before owning a husky. This won't happen with any of my husky's. We love them like family and will make sure they are only going to a family that has either owned a husky or is approved by our puppy application. We take our Siberians thru obedience training. I would highly recommend this to any husky owner. It teaches him what is expected of him and forms a bond between you and your new pal. The Siberian loves to socialize so this gives him the perfect opportunity to do so.  The Siberian is a challenging breed to train, but if you stay committed to teaching your husky, I think you will be highly rewarded. I was with mine. My Husky, Isabell Snow came in 5th place in obedience school and a friend of mine's husky came in 6th. Our husky, Cyrus and Amber also went thru obedience training. The others will too.

Born to Run, Chew, Dig, Exercise

NEVER ALLOW YOUR SIBERIAN HUSKY TO RUN LOOSESiberians are obsessed with running. They will get thru a whole in the fence, slip thru a collar, even climb fences or chew thru them to run. Running is a genetic factor in the husky. When your husky gets loose and finally stops running, he will probably look around, not even realize he is lost and happily follow the first person that he sees, even one who may harm him. That is why you have to know your Siberian is secure at ALL times. Husky's love to Chew. Especially while they are teething, as puppies you will not want to leave your husky out of an unsecured area while you are gone because something WILL be chewed on when you return. They also love to dig. They will dig a hole bigger than themselves at times. The longer they are away from their human family, the more destructive they will get. Husky's DO NOT want to be by themselves..they actually get depressed. You must exercise your siberian daily. Letting him run around in a fenced in yard everyday will just not do. They need constant excitement, walks, running, playing because they build up so much energy each and everyday. If you do not give your Siberian some sort of activites and adventure, he will get destructive!!
